Where exactly are the three departure points?
All three harbours fall within a roughly 12 km stretch of Bali’s south-east shoulder, but they feel different on arrival.
- Sanur is the main jetty for Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan crossings. Most private speedboats leave from a beachfront counter near Jalan Hang Tuah. The crossing from Sanur to Nusa Penida runs roughly 30 to 45 minutes by speedboat.
- Serangan (Turtle Island) is a reclaimed harbour just south of Sanur with a sheltered ramp. Boarding tends to be calmer here, which makes it a common choice for reef-fishing and island-hop departures.

Because the three points are close together on the map but separated by one-way lanes and beach-road traffic, the harbour you leave from is decided by your boat, not by which one looks nearest to your hotel. Your confirmation will always name the exact counter or pier.
How long does the drive take from your area?
Times below are typical morning estimates for a private car and depend heavily on traffic, roadworks and the time you set off. Leaving before 07:30 usually shaves 10 to 20 minutes off the higher figures.

The pattern is simple: the further north-west you stay (Seminyak, Canggu) or the further inland (Ubud), the longer every harbour becomes, and the more a pre-08:00 start earns its keep.
How do you get from the airport to each harbour?
If you fly in the day before, Benoa is the shortest hop, often 15 to 25 minutes north along the peninsula. Serangan and Sanur follow, usually within 25 to 45 minutes depending on the bypass. Some guests time an early flight and go straight to the boat, but that only works comfortably for a Benoa or Serangan departure with light bags. For a Sanur speedboat with an 08:30 sailing, landing that same morning is tight and not something we recommend.
Seminyak, Canggu and Ubud: what should you plan for?
These three areas share one problem: a slow, single-lane crawl toward the south-east coast during the morning school-and-work rush.
- Seminyak guests should budget the top of each range and leave by 07:15 for an 08:30 Sanur boat.
- Canggu adds the Kerobokan bottleneck, so treat the 70 to 80 minute figures as realistic, not worst-case.
- Ubud sits highest and furthest inland; a 06:45 to 07:00 departure is sensible for any 08:00 to 08:30 sailing.
If your stay is in one of these zones and you want the earliest manta-snorkel slots at Manta Bay or Crystal Bay, an overnight closer to Sanur or Nusa Dua removes almost all of the timing stress.
Where do you park at each harbour?
Parking style differs, and it is worth knowing before you circle a full lot with a boat waiting.

Self-drivers should factor in a few minutes to find a spot and walk to the water, especially at Sanur where the counter sits past the beach path. Drivers who drop and wait usually loiter in the same lots, so note where your car is before you board.
What happens at check-in?
Private day charters keep check-in short. You confirm your booking name at the counter or pier desk, the crew runs a quick safety and route briefing, and life jackets are issued for the crossing. A Sanur speedboat morning typically flows as an 08:00 counter briefing, an 08:30 sail, a first swim with manta rays around 09:30, snorkel sessions through late morning, and a beach-club lunch near midday, based on the sample Sanur-to-Penida itinerary published by Sanur Water Activities. Arriving 30 minutes early means you are boarding relaxed rather than jogging down the jetty.
Should you book a hotel pickup or drive yourself?
Both work. A private hotel pickup removes the parking question and the pre-dawn navigation, and it is priced per car rather than per person. Operators quote it separately from the boat: Sanur Water Activities lists an extra IDR 250,000 per car for its Sanur-counter trips, while a Viator-listed Nusa Penida day tour charges IDR 300,000 per car each way for up to five people, as of 2026 and subject to change. Self-driving saves that cost and gives you flexibility on the way home, but it puts the morning traffic entirely on you.

- Book a pickup if you are in Canggu, Seminyak or Ubud, travelling with children, or nervous about Bali’s morning roads.
- Self-drive or ride-hail if you are near Nusa Dua, Benoa or Sanur and comfortable leaving early.
What should you do the night before?
A short checklist keeps the morning calm:
- Confirm the exact harbour and counter name on your booking, not just the town.
- Set a departure alarm based on the higher drive estimate for your area.
- Pre-arrange the car, whether that is a booked pickup or your own driver.
- Pack light: swimwear under clothes, a dry bag, reef-safe sunscreen, and a charged phone.
- Screenshot the harbour map pin so a driver cannot mistake Sanur for Serangan.
